The Record
The Secretary maintains the Club's institutional memory — the records of every gathering, every agreement, every matter resolved and unresolved — catalogued in a system that members have attempted to understand and eventually stopped trying to. The organization is precise. The access is not self-evident. Several members have described searching for a specific record and finding something else entirely, something they had forgotten they had agreed to, which The Secretary later confirmed was not an accident.
His origins are not straightforward. He has no biography in the conventional sense — no school, no country of issue, no employer that any member has successfully verified. The Founder, when pressed on this, said only: "He knows more than he says and says more than you'd expect. That is the position."
He does not drink. He does not eat at Suppers. He is present at every gathering without exception and has not once, in all his years of service, been observed to be surprised by anything. Members have tested this. It has not worked.
He was asked once, by The Supreme Leader — which is to say, by someone accustomed to receiving answers — what exactly he was. He paused. Then he said: "An excellent question." And opened his ledger. And said nothing further. The Supreme Leader did not ask again. This is considered, in the Club's private tradition, the highest form of professional praise.
